Showplaces

A privacy-first iOS app for saving, organizing, and sharing the places that matter to you — restaurants, trip stops, hidden gems — without ever collecting your location data or requiring an account.

Showplaces

About This Project

Showplaces lets you build a personal map of places you care about. You can save any spot with a name, description, tags, photos, and more, then organize them into groups for trips, guides, or collections. Unlike Apple or Google Maps, Showplaces isn't limited to existing points of interest or generic descriptions, every showplace is fully customizable and yours to curate.

Privacy is a core design principle, not a bolt-on feature: the app works fully without an account, never collects location data without explicit opt-in, and is open source for full transparency (AGPL-3.0 backend, Apache 2.0/MIT frontends). Sharing is built to be frictionless - send a friend a snapshot of a place, share a live-updating guide (like an Airbnb host sharing local recommendations), or collaborate on a shared collection together.

Key features:

  • No sign-in required – fully functional with on-device storage
  • Custom tags with personal color/icon styling (styling is per-user, not baked into the tag)
  • Groups for trip/collection curation
  • Three sharing modes: Send a Copy (snapshot), Live (read-only live view), Collaborate (shared editing)
  • Rich media attachments with pre-known dimensions for smooth rendering
  • Opt-in, on-device visit tracking via geofencing (no server-side location tracking)
  • Open source: AGPL-3.0 (backend), Apache 2.0/MIT (frontends)

Currently in TestFlight beta for iOS, with Android, web, iPad/Mac, and Apple Watch planned.
